CRC Downloads

Terms & policy

Plain-language terms for CRC Downloads. They are written so that users and rights holders can find every answer here without needing to call us.

1. What CRC provides

The Computer Research Center (CRC) is a research and training body. The software on CRC Downloads comes out of that research and training work.

  • CRC sells a service, not content. The download handling fee pays for hosting, delivering and supporting the download. CRC does not host, store, sell or distribute anyone else's videos, music, images or other files.
  • CRC's own software is CRC's property. Where CRC charges for the software itself (for example a source code training kit), that price is shown separately and added to the handling fee.
  • The software runs on your own computer. What you download with a CRC tool, and from where, is your choice and your responsibility.

2. Acceptable use

By downloading or using CRC software you agree to use it lawfully. In particular you agree that you will only use it for content that:

  • you created or own; or
  • you have clear permission from the owner to copy or keep; or
  • is in the public domain, or is offered under a licence that allows copying — for example a suitable Creative Commons licence — and you follow that licence's conditions (such as giving credit).

You also agree that you will:

  • follow the terms of service of any website you use the software with. Some websites, for example YouTube's Terms of Service, limit downloading to cases they allow — those terms bind you, not CRC;
  • not use CRC software to break, bypass or remove any copy protection or digital lock;
  • not use CRC software to copy, share, sell or publish content you have no right to;
  • not resell or redistribute CRC software, except open-source parts as their own licences allow.
If you are not sure whether you may download something, do not download it. Ask the owner first. CRC cannot give you permission on someone else's behalf, and nothing on this site is legal advice.

3. Respect for rights holders

CRC would never knowingly act against any copyright or other rights holder. Our commitments:

  • Fast response. Every report gets a reference number at once and a reply within 2 business days.
  • Offline first, then review. If a report shows that a CRC download, its description or its marketing is unfair to a rights holder, we take the item concerned offline while we review it.
  • An apology where we got it wrong. If your concern is upheld, we confirm in writing what we changed or removed, with our apology.
  • Open-source requests honoured. If you ask for source code that a licence requires us to provide, we provide it.
  • Repeat misuse. We may refuse service to any user who misuses CRC software against others' rights.

Because CRC does not host anyone's videos or files, we cannot remove content from other websites or from a user's computer. Where a user is misusing a CRC tool, we will act on what we control: the download, the user's access and our records.

In Canada, copyright is governed by the Copyright Act. Rights holders may also contact us directly with the details below — we do not require any particular legal form.

4. How to report a concern

Use the Report a concern form — it takes about five minutes and you get a reference number straight away. Please include:

  1. your name, organisation (if any) and an e-mail address for our reply;
  2. the work, trademark or right concerned, and where the original can be seen;
  3. which CRC download your concern is about, if you know;
  4. what happened and what you would like CRC to do;
  5. a statement that you believe the use is not authorised, that your information is accurate and, if you act for an owner, that you are authorised to do so;
  6. your typed name as signature.

You can also e-mail the same details to info@crc-ca.com. We may share your report with the person or company concerned where that is needed to resolve it.

5. Trademarks

CRC and the CRC logo are marks of the Computer Research Center. Other names, such as YouTube (a trademark of Google LLC), Windows (a trademark of Microsoft Corporation) and other product or service names, belong to their owners. CRC uses them only to describe what its software works with. CRC is not affiliated with, sponsored or endorsed by any of those companies. If you think we have used your mark wrongly, please tell us and we will correct it.

6. CRC software licence

Unless a download says otherwise, CRC software is licensed — not sold — to you under the CRC Licence:

  • You may install and use it on your own computers for personal, research and training purposes.
  • You may not resell, rent, sub-license or publish it, or remove CRC's name, notices or labels from it.
  • Source code training kits: you may study, change and build the CRC code for your own learning and projects. You may not resell or publish the CRC walkthrough, training material or CRC-owned code as your own product.
  • Open-source components inside a download remain under their own licences (next section), and nothing in the CRC Licence limits your rights under those licences.
  • The licence ends automatically if you break these terms; you must then stop using the software.

7. Open-source components

Much modern software is built with open-source components, and some of CRC's software is too. For every download we list each component, its licence and where its source code can be found (see the item's page under Open-source components).

  • Where a component is under a licence such as the GNU GPL or LGPL, you receive that component under that licence, with all the rights it gives you — including access to its source code.
  • If a source link does not work, ask CRC and we will provide the source code free of charge (apart from any reasonable cost of physical media, if you ask for it).
  • CRC's fees pay for CRC's service, support and training — never for the right to use an open-source component.
  • You can read common licences at the Open Source Initiative.

8. No warranty and limits

  • CRC software is provided "as is", without any warranty that it is free of errors or suitable for a particular purpose, to the extent the law allows.
  • Websites change. Software that works with a third-party website may stop working at any time without notice, and CRC is not obliged to update it.
  • Check every file you download (each CRC download shows a SHA-256 fingerprint for this) and keep backups of your own data.
  • To the extent the law allows, CRC is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for how you use the software. CRC's total liability for any download is limited to what you paid CRC for it.
  • Nothing here removes rights you have as a consumer that cannot be removed by law.

9. Fees, members and refunds

Download handling feeShown on each item, per download (for example CAD 1.99). It pays for the download service, not for any content.
Software priceOnly where CRC charges for its own software. Shown separately and added to the handling fee.
Valid CRC membersThe handling fee is waived. Members confirm by e-mail on Member access. Any software price still applies unless the item says members get it free.
PaymentBy card through our payment provider. CRC never sees or stores your card number. Taxes, if any apply, are shown before you pay.
Your download linkWorks up to 3 times within 7 days of payment.
RefundsBecause a download is delivered at once, fees are not refundable once the download has started — except if the download fails, the file is faulty, or CRC withdraws the item before you could use it. Tell us within 14 days and we give you a new link or a refund.

10. Privacy for downloads

  • Each download is recorded with the item, version, date and time, whether it was a member, free or paid download, the member e-mail (for member downloads) and a scrambled (hashed) form of your internet address — never the address itself.
  • Why: to run the service, prevent abuse, honour members' benefits, answer rights holders and meet our record-keeping duties.
  • Concern reports are kept as a record of how each concern was handled.
  • Card details go directly to the payment provider; CRC never receives them.
  • We do not sell personal information. To see or correct what we hold about you, write to info@crc-ca.com. See also the CRC Privacy Policy.

11. Frequently asked questions

For users

Is it legal to use a downloader?

Using software to save content is legal when you have the right to that content — for example your own uploads, content with the owner's permission, public-domain works or suitably licensed works. It is not allowed for content you have no right to copy, and some websites' terms forbid downloading except where they allow it. Those rules are yours to follow; if unsure, do not download.

What exactly am I paying for?

The handling fee pays for CRC's download service — hosting, delivery and support. If CRC charges for its own software, that price is shown separately. You never pay CRC for anyone else's content.

I am a CRC member. Why was I asked to pay?

Confirm your membership first on Member access using your member e-mail. Member status is only recognised after that, in the same browser. If your membership is still being reviewed, the fee applies until it is approved.

The code e-mail did not arrive.

Check your spam folder and that you used the e-mail on your CRC membership. Codes are only sent to valid member e-mails. You can ask for a new code after 45 seconds.

The software stopped working with a website.

Websites change often. Check the item's page for a newer version. CRC does not promise that the software keeps working with any third-party website.

How do I know the file is genuine?

Each item shows a SHA-256 fingerprint. On Windows, run Get-FileHash on the downloaded file in PowerShell and compare. Only download CRC software from this site.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, if the download failed, the file is faulty, or CRC withdrew the item before you could use it — tell us within 14 days. See Fees, members and refunds.

Can I share or resell the software?

No — CRC software is for your own use. Open-source parts may be shared under their own licences.

For rights holders

Does CRC host or sell my videos?

No. CRC does not host, store, sell or distribute anyone's videos or files. CRC software runs on the user's own computer.

Do I need to call or send a legal letter?

No. The online form is enough and gives you a reference number at once. E-mail to info@crc-ca.com also works.

How fast will CRC respond?

Within 2 business days. If your concern is upheld we take the item concerned offline and confirm it to you in writing, with our apology.

Can CRC remove my content from another website or from a user's computer?

No — that is outside CRC's control. We act on what we control: our downloads, their descriptions, a user's access to CRC downloads, and our records.

What information do you need from me?

See How to report a concern. The more precise the details, the faster we can act.

Will you share my report?

Only where needed to resolve it — for example with the user concerned or our advisers — and as required by law.

For developers and learners

Does the source code kit include open-source parts?

It may. Each is listed with its licence and source link on the item's page. Those parts stay under their own licences; the CRC walkthrough, training material and CRC-owned code are under the CRC Licence.

Can I use what I learn in my own projects?

Yes — that is the purpose of CRC training. Please do not republish the CRC kit itself or present it as your own product.
